The organisation own a number of properties around the country with much of this property being historic buildings of listed building nature.
Acorn Care & Education are committed to the maintenance and upkeep of the building stock within their portfolio and require that all work undertaken is carried out with a view to the correct conservation methods and techniques associated with buildings of this type and nature.
In June 2010 Acorn Care & Education engaged NK Consultants to specify and contract manage the rebuilding of a number of stone chimneys and the repair of stonework on two different historic school buildings.
A recent condition survey of two schools, Crookhey Hall School and Underley Hall School identified significant defects with stone chimneys and various high level stone work.
It was noted that structural stonework was cracked and dislodged, mortar was perished and chimneys were leaning, some significantly.
Following close inspections of the defects, appropriate specifications were prepared with conservation in mind with respect to the materials and repair methods chosen.
All defects were rectified with some chimneys being carefully dismantled and rebuilt re-using the existing stones entirely.
The chosen contractor undertaking the repairs was an experienced contractor who specialised in this type of repair work.
